Nous sommes en route!

Well, iMonk family, Gail and I are soon off on our dream trip of a lifetime. Monday, we will fly out of Chicago to Munich, Germany, take the train to Switzerland, and then spend the next couple of weeks around Lake Geneva and in the high Alps. We’ll then journey over to Italy, where a week in a farmhouse inn in Tuscany awaits us.

You’ll be getting dispatches from the road along the way, and some of our other iMonk writers will be helping fill posts while we’re gone.

I promise lots of pictures and impressions when we get back.

À toute à l’heure!
Bis nachher!
Arrivederci!

  1. David Cornwell says

Michael, I’m so happy for you and Gail. Blessings! Have fun, get some rest, take some photos; enjoy God’s Creation.

  2. As a Lutheran, I assume you’ll take some time to throw some tomatoes at the statues of Calvin in Lake Geneva? 😛

  3. Klasie Kraalogies says

Lovely! I was in Geneva last November. If you can, visit CERN. Fantastic.

Also, the Swiss transport system is the 8th wonder of the world. When the time table says the train arrives, at 8:23, It arrives at 8:23. Not 8:24. Not 8:22. It is bliss.

  4. Denise Spencer says

Oh, my goodness! Have the time of a lifetime on your trip of a lifetime!

  5. Things you should do:
    – Eat cheese fondue (in Gruyeres for example)
    – Visit Lavaux, take a stroll in the vines, catch the view, try some of the white wine.
    – Take the MOB train from Montreux up into the Alps.
    – Walk along the lakeside, in Geneva, Ouchy (Lausanne), Vevey or Montreux.
    – Take a boat ride on the lake (if they’re still running) (https://www.cgn.ch)
    – Go to the circus? (https://www.knie.ch/circus)
    – Go for a long walk somewhere in the Alps (as long as the weather is fine!)
    – (If you’re into organs, the only American-built cathedral organ in Europe is in Lausanne cathedral)

Drop me a line if you want to meet someone while you’re at the Eastern end of the lake 🙂

  6. ENJOY!!

  7. If you get a chance to go to Beau-Rivage Geneva it has beautiful views of the lake and the food is five star. Enjoy yorself

  8. Enjoy! Have a lovely trip.

  9. When in Tuscany you’ll have to visit Florence and the Uffizi Gallery. And the cathedral there, it goes without saying. In Siena, the cathedral (they call them “il duomo”) is way over the top ostentatious, architecture as well as ornamentation, from the floors to the ceilings. Sneak into the little “library” off to one side of the nave of the duomo in Siena . You’ll think you’re in the Sistine Chapel, but you won’t have to stand in line.

Art dripping from everywhere over there. And the coffee is good.

  10. What a wonderful trip – you can’t help but enjoy it!

Zurich is lovely too, if that’s on you itinerary. Pull over to the side of the road and have a picnic on the mountainside near some cows with those big Swiss bells. Yes, a lakeside walk. And speaking of walking, once you get to the center of Florence you can walk to see everything notable.

Gute Reise! Buon Viaggio! And may God and his saints smooth your paths.

    Dana

  11. Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

  12. Dang it! Why aren’t I going to Munich and Lake Geneva and Switzerland and the Alps? I’m just sitting here.

  13. Have a great trip!

  14. Hallelujah, what a beautiful trip.
    Felicidades

Have a wonderful time! Eat good food, see fascinating sights, see beautiful vistas, take a river cruise or two if you can (it’s an entirely different perspective on the world), take pictures, bring back things (not the made-in-China tourist junk) that remind you of your trip, and come home safe.

  16. Just coming back from 10 days on the isle of Malta ourselves! Safe travels.
