Dorothy Atherton Spencer 1922-2006

My mother passed away this morning at 2:10 a.m. I will be off blog for several days. Comments may not be moderated. Thanks for your prayers and patience.

I prayed this prayer for my mom dozens of times the last few hours:

Christian Soul, depart and go to God. Lord, receive this, your child, made in your image, purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ, baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Receive her, your own daughter, who has trusted you in life and now trusts you in death. In Jesus name, receive her into the Kingdom of Light with all the saints and angels to welcome her. Amen

  1. May God grant you and your family peace as you grieve your mother’s death and celebrate her life.

  2. Praying for you and your family.

  3. peace and grace, Imonk. prayers for you and your family.

Praise God for her, and for her ministry to you!

  7. Lux æterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in æternum, quia pius es. Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine; et lux perpetua luceat eis.

(“May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord, with thy saints in eternity, for thou art merciful. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them.”)

  8. I am the father of Pam Thompson. We attended Bible Study in your home while we were visiting James and Pam. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Michael, know that I am praying for you my dear brother. The grace of God is sufficient in times like these!

  11. Michael,

May God give you and your family grace and peace through this difficult time. Thank you for all that you have given to the church at large with your writing (I can’t begin to say how much it has helped me) and I hope you feel supported in return.

  12. Praying for you, bro.

  13. Having lost my mother, how know how that goes. My condolences and prayers are with you.

  14. In the Desert of the Real, I sit, and I feel, and I weep at your loss, and rejoice at Heaven’s gain.

Blessings on you. Feel free to hide here if you wish, and come back when you are ready.

The Desert of the Real is for truths like yours, whether they be joy or pain.

  15. Dear Michael,

Thank you for so graciously sharing these parts of your life with all of us who only know you online. Keeping you and yours in prayer,

  16. May God bless you and your family my brother.

  17. Eternal rest grant to her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace with Your saints forevermore, for You are gracious.

  18. Philologus says

You are in my thoughts and prayers. May the Lord give you much grace and peace during this time. Remember that He is the God of all comfort.

    In Him,

  19. As a friend has said, death is always harder on those left behind.

    Lord, have mercy.

  20. I’m so sorry, and yet I too know the relief that comes when our mother’s struggles are finally released from this veil of tears. Our mothers are both rejoicing in ways inexpressible to us now. But they look upon us with a wry smile and a twinkle in their eyes, knowing that our ultimate joys are but just before us, and then we will rejoice together for all eternity. Blessings brother in this nonetheless difficult time.

  22. I am catching up on your posts–was on vacation until July 10. CodeforChrist said it best. I pray you chersh the memory and legacy of your mother and her faith and will be gentle with yourself in your time of grief.

  23. mike, just reading this. i will pray for you and yours.

  24. Well, Irenicum beat me to using the phrase “vale of tears”, but that seems an apropos description of life, the older I get. Having lost both our fathers in the past three years, my wife & I understand what you’re going through. (Sometimes it feels like everyone I’ve admired is passing from this life…) I know it’s been a couple of weeks now, but be assured that we continue to think about and pray for you.

One day it will be our turn. We will step beyond this vale into everlasting joy in the presence of our Lord and Savior, where there will be no more weeping nor sorrow. I say, bring it on!!!
